The reading desk is a Minecraft skin editor with a search button. Paint the flat 64 × 64 texture or paint straight onto the 3D model, then press "Search the Library". The Library fills in every pixel you left unwritten and opens the page that holds the finished skin.
A skin has two layers. The base layer is the body itself. The overlay layer sits on top of it and holds the hat, jacket, sleeves and trousers. You paint each layer separately, and overlay pixels can be transparent. "Quill" paints, "Unwrite" turns pixels back into unwritten ones, and "Hole" makes overlay pixels transparent. "Flood" fills an area without leaving its face of the model, "Dropper" picks up a colour, and "Undo" and "Redo" work as usual. Your drawing stays in this browser between visits.
Pixels you have not painted are unwritten. Under "Fill the rest with", pick one of three modes for them. "Silence" makes every unwritten base pixel black and leaves unwritten overlay pixels transparent, so the same drawing always opens the same page. "Static" gives unwritten pixels random colours, which is what almost every page containing your drawing looks like. "Echoes" gives them colours close to the ones you used, scattered at random, which finds the rare pages that share your palette. Static and Echoes leave unwritten overlay pixels transparent unless you turn on "Fill unwritten overlay pixels too".
Press "Bring your own skin" and choose the PNG file. Skins in the current 64 × 64 format open as they are. Older 64 × 32 skins have no left arm or leg, so the desk copies the right ones. A whole skin already sets all 3,264 pixels, so there is nothing to fill: the search opens the one page that holds exactly that skin. From there, "Find a near copy" shows a page that differs from yours in 24 pixels. On every page, "Download skin" saves a skin PNG that you can upload to Minecraft.
